Wild burros

The Senate also prohibited BLM from using funds to kill healthy unadopted wild horses and burros!

Update Sept. 25, 2009: The Senate has voted to pass H.R. 2996, an appropriations bill for 2010 for the Dept. of Interior including the Bureau of Land Management ("BLM").

BLM manages the nation's wild horses and burros. In the bill the Senate made clear to the BLM: Appropriations ... made [in this bill]shall not be available for the destruction of healthy, unadopted, wild horses and burros in the care of the Bureau of Land Management or its contractors or for the sale of wild horses and burros that results in their destruction for processing into commercial products.

  1. This is great news. Now who's going to enforce it, the BLM pretty much does what it wants and answers to no one as far as I can see. Let's hope if they really crack down on these jerks that they will feel it's easier to let the horses roam free instead of having to take care of them and not sell them for slaughter to make a good buck.

  2. I think the horses need to be taken out from under the BLM's management altogether. I'd NEVER trust them. They need to be managed my some other entity that doesn't WANT them destroyed.

There is just too much conflict of interest in the BLM. Well, I take that back. There is no "conflict" - the BLM is for anyone who'll PAY them, and to hell with the horses.
